On the subject of the renewable energies, Pinhel has promoted with other Portuguese and Spanish rural municipalities a study related to energetic efficiency and renewable energy sources that ended in a cross border plan for energetic optimization. Simultaneously, Pinhel is mapping its potential for the production of renewable energies (solar and wind) and is implementing a network for the use of biomass. Additionally, the city of Pinhel participates in various projects promoted by the Association of Municipalities of Cova da Beira, namely:

  • Guide to Savings - Optimization and Energy Efficiency;
  • PTOE - is a project that seeks to reduce the bill and the energy consumption of conventional energy sources and, at the same time, promote the use of renewable energy, including the use of solar thermal, photovoltaic, biomass, biodiesel and bioethanol;
  • Recovery of Renewable Energies and the definition of new methodologies for the development of biomass;
  • Projects with recycled oils - with these projects of transformation of cooking oil into biodiesel, the City of Pinhel will give a further significant step in the bid for renewable energy and on reduction of pollutants in the environment, since it is a way to reduce the volume of oil to be treated, and so, to contribute to the better functioning of these ecosystems. The biodiesel can be used in vehicles, farm machinery and boilers.
