Pézenas is a city of 8 500 inhabitants in the south of France known for its historical centre and its way of life. Pezenas-fete.gif

Pézenas is one of the main Arts and Crafts cities in France.

The famous French author Moliere spent a long time in the city between 1646 and 1657 after his first failure in Paris. He founded the so called Moliere illustrious theatre. Marcel Pagnol himself wrote about this : « If Jean-Baptiste Poquelin was born in Paris, Moliere was born in Pézenas. »

Pezenas-carte.gifThe city shows a great interest for sustainable development and renewable energies.

Here are some measures implemented to increase both the quality of life and the environment of the city :

  • The Pedibus or « walking bus »: a school walk for the children instead of taking the bus
  • The creation of a recycling center in partnership with the the SICTOM (local professional association for domestic waste) and the metropolitan area
  • The green neighbourhood of Saint-Christol : urban and rural projects are linked in the same project.

Since 1939, oil exploration campaigns have taken place in the Region, but no oil was found. However, a geothermal water spring was discovered in 1950.

This hot and drinkable spring was first used to heat the town swimming pools. In 2004, the installation was changed to suit the new European sanitary norms. From that time, the heating system has been connected to the town network. Now, the water is heated by the calories of the geothermal spring.  In addition, the thermal potential has been used for the past few years  to heat the gymnasium of the Town sports complex.

In line with the wider approach the city of Pézenas has undertaken to improve water quality and preserve its natural resources, they now want to exploit the mineral qualities of the water differently and in a sustainable way. Indeed, they are now exploring the possibility to build a spa, which is why they are having the water certified by the regional health agency.

Based on the voluntary participation of the parents, this system enables them to take a group of children from home to school along a pre-determined itinerary.
The Pedibus route is dotted with stations where "line leaders" take responsibility for the children at a specific time and location.

This project is supported by ADEME (National agency for the environment and energy efficiency) and the Languedoc Roussillon Region. Pézenas has also been recognized by Europe as the leader of the « MED-Ecoquartiers » program for the creation of sustainable neighbourhoods in the Mediterranean area.

The SICTOM (local professional association for domestic waste) of Pezenas-Agde is apublic institution for inter-city cooperation founded in 1976 by 12 cities. Today, the SICTOM covers 54 member cities and 110 295 year-round inhabitants.Pezenas-sictom.gif

Since its foundation, the SICTOM’s missions have developed and now include :

  • The collection and processing of domestic waste
  • The separation and sorting out of waste for recycling purposes including the management of the various recycling points
  • The communication and prevention actions for the general population
